Law Europe International

My name is Maxime Leoni, I am a trainee-attorney from France, and I have always been interested in American Law. I started my legal studies at Nantes University and then studied at Cardiff Law School where I obtained a LLM in European Legal Studies. Back in France, I received a master’s degree from Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne; in comparative legal studies and American English business law, where I wrote a dissertation about American constitutional law. Also, I have a degree in international project management from the business school ESCP-Europe.

As part of my trainee-attorney program, I had to do an internship for 6 months, which could be carried out abroad. I met the managing partner of Vogt, Resnick & Sherak, LLP, Barnet Resnick, at the Law Europe International annual conference in Nantes, France. I expressed to Barry, my interest in American law and he offered me the opportunity to join him in his firm.

I have worked on different matters, from Trusts to mediation. I went to the federal district court and state court, with the attorneys regarding probate and tax law matters. I wrote deposition summary and drafted deeds. I sat in meetings with clients. I have seen how American lawyers approach various situations and how they manage the clients’ expectations and legal issues. However, beyond the technical and legal words, the most interesting part for me was being able to observe the American way of thinking about law.

The most challenging thing for me was understanding the American legal system, which is very different from the French system, and the technical language as well. These six months have definitely been a strong experience for me and this internship has given me a complete overview on the American way of dealing with legal issues. I have learned much and have observed how American attorneys practice law in California. These six months have made a considerable contribution to me not only for developing my skills and knowledge but also in improving myself.

I am really thankful to Barry Resnick, Vogt, Resnick & Sherak managing partner, for this opportunity.
